Pain relief

Acupuncture is an Eastern treatment method that has been applied to people and animals for more than 3,000 years. It is a technique for relieving pain and improving the functioning of various organs by stimulating certain points in the body.

Piercing these points leads to:

  • A local reaction that improves circulation and stimulates nerve bundles
  • A generalised reaction that stimulates the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic), among other things.
  • This generalised reaction also causes the release of various bodily substances (hormones, endorphins, serotonins, etc.)

When can acupuncture be helpful?

Acupuncture can be applied to all types of pets. Dogs, cats, rabbits... Does your dog or cat suffer from chronic pain?

  • Orthopaedic problems: hip dysplasia, knee problems, disc hernia, symptoms of paralysis, muscle problems, etc.
  • Respiratory conditions: if a cat has asthma, etc.
  • Gastrointestinal problems: constipation, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps
  • Epilepsy
  • Problems with specific organs: liver, kidneys, etc.

It is important to mention that a prior examination by your vet, with a correct diagnosis of the problem, is indispensable before commencing acupuncture.

How long does a session last?

The duration of the session will depend on the animal's symptoms. For acute problems, a treatment could take only a few minutes, while other patients may need up to half an hour of treatment.

The treatment frequency will vary from patient to patient. An acute problem will be treated every few days, or around once a week for a chronic problem.

A treatment period of 3-6 weeks can be expected on average. Improvement is anticipated after 4 sessions at the most.

Is acupuncture painful?

Owing to the use of very thin, flexible needles, only very sensitive animals will notice them.

Responses from the body can often be observed during treatment (panting, relaxation, compulsive movements (excessive licking), hairs standing on end, etc.). These are not expressions of pain and these responses will disappear after the session.

Is acupuncture safe?

The use of sterile throw-away needles means there is no danger of infections.

As regards the side-effects, a short-lived worsening of the symptoms may occur. These will subside by themselves.

There are no long-term side-effects.
